Cosmetic Botox Injections
To combat frown lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet, a minute quantity of botulinum toxin is injected to relax the muscles that cause these conditions. The cosmetic effects of botulinum toxin last between three and six months.

The lines and wrinkles created by repeated muscle movement over years are often the first aging changes that people notice, and are among the easiest to treat.
Botox is a quick, easy procedure with a minimal risk of bruising when performed by an experienced practitioner. Professor Kelly has been using Botox for years to treat patients with facial palsy, asymmetry and post traumatic facial weakness.
Botox can also be used to remove prominent wrinkles, lift down turned mouth corners, erase chin dimpling and to smooth the neck and forehead areas.
Patients often start Botox treatments in their late 20’s to 30’s when they start to notice lines between the eyes, across the forehead or in the crow’s feet area when they aren’t smiling, squinting or frowning.
The early use of Botox, before lines are “etched” in the skin, can prevent wrinkles from becoming too prominent.
The Benefits of Botox
Botox is widely used for medical and cosmetic purposes and is not harmful in small doses. Botox causes temporary paralysis of underling muscles as it blocks nerve impulses travelling to that specific muscle. It is injected in small doses and wears off after 3-6 months. It can be combined with a dermal filler to reduce the appearance of frown lines.
Botox Medical Treatments
Botox has been approved for treating more than 20 medical conditions and there is continuing research to broaden the number of conditions. Right now it is approved for eyelid spasms, neck and shoulder spasms, migraines, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, and others. It is even used to treat Cerebral Palsy and allergic rhinitis.
What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic is the trade name of Botulinum Toxin Type A, a purified natural protein toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum, and is the registered trademark of Allergan Inc. In controlled small doses, it is injected directly into the muscles that cause frown lines. These isolated muscles are relaxed by BOTOX® Cosmetic and can no longer contract. Because the specific muscles no longer contract, the action of frowning is stopped and the frown lines soften, relax, and diminish.
Where Can BOTOX® Cosmetic Be Injected?
The most common areas of use of BOTOX® Cosmetic are the frown lines between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead lines, and crow’s feet. On occasion, some other areas may be treated as well.
When Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Start to Work and How Long Does It Last?
The results of your BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment will begin to appear in three to four days. The effect will last three to four months, after which the treated muscles will gradually regain their action. When the lines begin to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired results.
How Safe Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® Cosmetic has been used safely and successfully in ophthalmology for over 10 years and for wrinkle therapy for over 6 years. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the only possible side effects are temporary and localized to the area of injection.
What Side Effects May Be Experienced?
As with any injection, there can be temporary swelling, redness, bruising, headache or local discomfort. Rarely, patients have been reported to develop a slight lowering of the eyelid or slight lowering of the forehead. This is temporary and resolves in a few weeks. Some patients may have an uneven or incomplete response to the treatment. BOTOX® Cosmetic does not reduce the action of the muscles of facial expression distant form the site of treatment. Patients with neuromuscular disorder should inform their doctor before therapy. BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment should not be administered to women who are pregnant.
